Welcome to Africa

Africa

Africa is the second largest continent of the world in relation to land area and population. Surrounded by Mediterranean Sea to the North, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and Indian Ocean to the southeast, the whole of Africa has 54 immensely different countries which contain a wide range of peoples, cultures, customs and religions. The immensity of the land offers a large variety of interesting places to visit, like the world’s longest river, the Nile, or Mount Kilimanjaro, the world's tallest free-standing mountain, or, again, Djibouti’s Lake Assal, the second lowest point on Earth, the saltiest lake outside Antarctica, and one of the world’s hottest places. But the African continent is also considered the cradle of adventurous places and stunning scenery: from the tropical rain forests of Central Africa to the endless sandy expanse of the Sahara, with its rippling dunes, from the typical savannah to indented mountains and green-tinged highlands crowding the whole continent, Africa has few peers when it comes to natural beauty. Moreover, Africa offers many possibilities to enjoy the beauty of its places through a great variety of amazing and adventurous activities: visitors can venture into the jungle joining the safari experience, travel long journeys in the Sahara Desert with Tuareg caravans, visit pygmy villages, travel down a river in a typical “pirogue”, relax on one of the beautiful tropical islands in the Indian Ocean, and much more. One of the features which mostly contributes to the particularity of the land is its weather: Africa is known as a hot and warm continent but, because of its geographical situation between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, it is crossed by several climatic zones such as the equatorial climate, the tropical wet and dry climate, the tropical monsoon climate, the semi-arid climate, the desert climate and others. So, the climate of Africa ranges from tropical to subarctic on its highest peaks and if the northern half is primarily desert or arid, both in the central and southern areas the climate is tropical, very humid: this is where the maximum annual rainfall is registered.
